Canada slaps new round of sanctions on Syria:
17 high-ranking individuals in the Assad regime and 5 entities linked chemical weapons targeted
ARTICLE SUMMARY
Canada has an existing set of sanctions on Syria, but they have implemented a brand new set of sanctions on top of that. The Canadian government is working with its allies to prevent the Assad regime from battling its own civilians and killing off non-supporters. Canada decided to put an asset freeze and dealings prohibition on 17 officials of the Syrian government and five other organizations.
PERSONAL THOUGHTS
This sanction could possibly work to stop the Syrian government from attacking its own civilians, but I feel that Syria would not discontinue these actions and even work to fight against Canada for going against its own government. However, Syria is in no state to go into another war against one of the most powerful nations in the world, so this will be another challenge Syria must face.
HOW THE ARTICLE TIES TO Syria's POLITICAL LIFE
This ties back to Syria's political life as these new sanctions deeply affect the Syrian officials listed in sanctions from Canada. The government is now publicly under fire from a powerful nation, bringing more global attention to the corruption and chaos in Syria currently.
